Snow Performance’s Stage 3 Diesel Boost Cooler
I have personally been running Snow Performance’s Stage 3 Diesel Boost Cooler water methanol injection on all of my diesel trucks for the past 8 years. I didn’t install these kits hoping for horse power. I use Snow’s product because it is the biggest drop in EGT’s (Exhaust Gas Temperatures) that I have ever experienced from an affordable aftermarket product.
The horse power gain from this diesel boost cooler is more of a bonus than anything, but for me the drop in EGT’s is the difference between down shifting while towing a heavy load or having to let off the throttle during a race because the engine was normally at the point of melting down.
Obviously upgrading air flow components is a good idea as well. That should be the first step when building a truck with high performance in mind. But methanol injection is a quick easy way of cooling things down without spending a small fortune.
You will also notice an increase in fuel mileage and a fairly big increase at that. Other modifications to the engine are going to make the mileage number vary greatly. So I don’t like telling people what they are going to see mileage wise, but it will go up.
Water methanol also acts as a detergent and helps to clean carbon and soot buildup out of the engine. This aspect alone is why I tend to install so many of these kits on vehicles that are equipped with a factory EGR system. The water injection will break up and clean the soot out of the intake manifold making the truck perform much better than it would in stock form.
Probably the BEST thing about water methanol injection and this diesel boost cooler is the ease and affordability at which you can acquire the water mixture. It’s windshield washer fluid!
You can get it anywhere and it is usually about $1.00 a gallon.
When I was towing and only using the kit to lower the EGT’s I ran straight water. Bottled water is best because you don’t want hard water mineral deposits building up in the system.
These kits work on exactly the same principle as the Stage 1 kits, except that the controllers are heavier duty and can read up to 100psi of turbo boost. This is the typical starting point for a mildly modified modern 3/4 or 1 ton truck with an aftermarket exhaust, intake and chip or programmer. It is capable enough for trucks running large or compound turbo systems as well. These kits allow for great horsepower increases and EGT reductions – expect about 70hp and 250 degree F EGT drop.
